I did just that by painting the hood, body panels, and rims with a good enamel tractor paint in a spray can. The implements, including snow blowers, plow blades, bucket, and mower decks, were painted, too, with the same enamel. It was Rust-Oleum Farm and Implement Paint, which is available in tractor colors.

What kind of paint is used on farm equipment?
Rust-Oleum Farm and Implement Paint worked well on my John Deere 112 tractor, snow blower, mower deck, bucket, and plow blade. I did not paint the tractor with a brush; instead, I painted the tractor with spray cans outside.
I used one can of John Deere yellow paint on the plow blade. I applied liberally. The quality tractor paint went on smooth and did not run even when painting outdoors with a little wind. The spray can’s nozzle was easy to push. The paint came out perfect.
Does tractor paint need primer?
My preparation was not flawless, though. I did not sandblast or use sandpaper on every nook and cranny. I scuffed the surface with a Scotchbrite pad and sanded the rusty metal. This is not a show tractor but a working tractor. Showroom quality was not my concern.
I applied two coats of primer before spraying the final coat. The final coat turned out better than I expected — especially from a spray can.
Now, I have two more tractors to paint.
